The developers of the first fully plant-based bacon cheeseburger meant for food service wanted to debut the vegan burger at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Hailed as the top school in the country for campus dining for the fifth consecutive year, it only made sense that Sweet Earth Foods, a Nestlé brand, picked UMass to launch its “PB Triple Play bac’n cheezeburger.”
It will debut at the school on Friday to coincide with National Cheeseburger Day.
“We take pride in innovating in food and beverage with strategic partners like Nestlé Professional,” the Executive Director of Auxiliary Enterprises at UMass Ken Toong said in a statement. “We are the first university in the USA to offer Sweet Earth plant-based bacon and cheese on our burgers and it’s a great fit for our students who are demanding craveable dishes with better ingredients yet zero compromise to taste.”
The vegan burger contains 27 grams of protein with three plant-based alternatives – the Sweet Earth Awesome Burger, Sweet Earth Bac’n, and Sweet Earth Cheeze.
The Sweet Earth Awesome Burger was developed using yellow pea protein and non-GMO ingredients. Sweet Earth Bac’n combines plant-based protein with smoky flavors and a blend of plant-based oils that produce a crispy and juicy texture expected from traditional pork bacon. Finally, Sweet Earth’s American-style Cheeze slices are made with a blend of plant-based fibers to deliver a stretchy and melty texture.
UMass will debut the PB Triple Play in dining halls, take-away, through online delivery and on their food truck, with the special to become a permanent menu item this fall. Additional colleges, restaurants and foodservice channels will have the PB Triple Play in the coming months.
